Choosing colours to paint your home is a very personal thing.
You can trust in the experts by checking out several (no less than 5) different decorating magazines, to see what the new colour trends are.
You can trust in yourself and check your closets and wardrobe to see what colours you most commonly use/wear.
Or you can go to a good quality, reputable paint retailer and talk to their consultants.
In all cases, bring home a few samples, put them in the various rooms you intend to decorate and "live with them" for a while.
Check them out in daylight and in the evening under the incandescent or fluorescent lights you commonly use.
Be sure you are comfortable with your choices and then unless you are the very confident and adventurous type, move one shade lighter in the colour chip (when all of your walls are painted, the light reflecting off of them tends to make you perceive the colours as darker or more intense).
Unless you want to show the detail inside, black is a very popular option.
