Corespun yarns are generally made of a continuous polyester fibre with what are referred to as "staple fibres" such as cotton or hemp wrapped around, and often finished with a gloss coating. Combined we end up with a very strong thread, with an interesting property: when it gets wet, the sheath expands, and if used in stitching, fills the stitch holes creating a waterproof seal. This is especially useful in shoes and boots, greatcoats, jackets, tents, weatherproof covers and sails. This does not impact on the strength of the thread because that is all in the polyester core.

There's another important property of such threads: during the textile manufacturing process, these threads pass through the sewing machine needles at very high speed. This would be enough to cause sufficient friction to melt the core (and jam the machine), but as it is insulated by the cotton sheath, melting is prevented.

There are three commercial methods of spinning yarn into the product we see at the store. They are called Ring Spun, Rotor Spun, and Friction Spun. Each method produces different results in the yarn. Increasing the elongation percent in Ring Spun yarn requires a fiber preparation method of carding (brushing). This will produce a softer, longer yarn whis is best used for knitted items.
