This was, however, based on some competitive rules:

• Each paper link can be no longer than 18 inches.
• Each paper can be no wider than 1 1/4 inches.
• Each loop must be hand stapled.
• A team may have up to, but not more than 60 people.
• A time limit of 24 hours.

For comparative purposes, a single sheet of white paper 8 1/2 by 11 can create 44 links that are 1/4 inch wide and about 2.5 to 3.0 inches in length, for a total chain length (stretched out) of about 132 inches or 11 feet. It would take 26,080 sheets of paper to create a world record chain, with each of 60 people using 18 sheets of paper per hour for 24 hours straight, or 1 sheet per person every 3 minutes for a total of 1.1 million links and 220 boxes of staples.
