I would use acrylic since when it dries, it is water resistant. Oil paint might work, but would take longer to dry.
The steps involved in completing an umbrella painting project are: Choose a suitable umbrella to paint on. Prepare the umbrella by cleaning and drying it thoroughly. Sketch out your design on the umbrella using a pencil. Use fabric paint or acrylic paint to fill in the design. Allow the paint to dry completely before using the umbrella.
Probably your best option is acrylic paint. Acrylic paint also is good on polyester.
Polyester paint is not typically designed for use with a heat press, as it may not adhere well to fabrics when subjected to high temperatures. Instead, heat transfer vinyl or specially formulated inks for heat transfer applications are recommended. If you attempt to use polyester paint, be aware that it may not provide the desired results and could damage the fabric or the heat press. Always check the manufacturer's guidelines for compatibility before proceeding.

To spray paint an umbrella, first ensure it's clean and dry, removing any dirt or debris. Use painter's tape to protect the areas you don't want to paint, like the ribs and handle. Choose a spray paint suitable for outdoor use and apply it in light, even coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Once finished, let the umbrella dry completely before using it to ensure the paint adheres well.
Use hairspray on it :) Sounds crazy but really works! ;D
Polyester and cotton.
Umbrellas are typically made with waterproof materials such as polyester or nylon. The cloth should be durable, water-resistant, and able to withstand wind and regular use. Light-weight materials are also preferred for ease of portability.
