I guess its because Japanese people always did it because it ws part of their culture. Possibly other people learning about Japan found out about origami and thought it was a nice or cool activity.
Japan; but it was created in China and brought to Japan. It is very popular in the Asian countries than the European or American countries. It is used for entertainment and decorations.
I do believe the plural for 'origami' is 'origami' much like the word 'deer' it stays the same irregardless. "I have lots of origami"
