It is on the left side of the evaporator case. You will need to remove the accelerator pedal to gain access to it. I have heard of some "butcher" type mechanics that will just rip the old one out and shove the new one in with the pedal still in place, but the proper way is to remove it. Get a few non-lock type 6mm nuts to put the pedal back on with as the original nuts are self locking type. You need to be a pretty "flexible" person as the area you are working in is quite small and tight.

Purchase a Purolator cabin filter. It comes with detailed instructions.
I have not done it yet, but I have been told by more than one Volvo Dealership that it requires removing the gas pedal to get to the cabin air filter (it's apparently on the driver's side). Good luck!

On the passengers side, look underneath the glove box and you will see a kick panel. It is held in place by two Phillips screws, so remove those two screws. Remove the panel, then slide the cabin filter out and replace it. Where can I buy the filter, I know that's what you are thinking, check either your Volvo dealer or Amazon.com On Amazon, search for TYC Cabin Air Filter for VOLVO 40 Series: S40 Old Style, V40 (2000-2004). Price is roughly $16
