you are probably not picking the stitch up in the right spot so you are getting lets say 1/2 the stitch and then again getting 1/2 again .. but you you only do it sometimes.. when you learn to knit stay to the points of your needles at first to make it clearer to see the stitch .. chances are you are doing this at the first stitch when you turn

What do you do if the scarf you are knitting gets wider?

either your tension is getting looser so you might want to try knitting a bit tighter or you are adding extra stitches as you go along, probably by catching the yarn on the needle and making an extra loop (which can often be seen as a small hole in the fabric). you can either pull it back to fix it, keep it as a design feature or just accept it as part of the learning process

When near the end of row how do you end off and start the next row?

When you reach the end of a row in knitting, you typically finish the last stitch of that row and then turn your work around. To start the next row, you simply begin by knitting or purling the first stitch according to your pattern. Remember to maintain tension and follow the stitch pattern as you continue. If you're using circular needles, you simply keep working in the same direction without turning the work.

How do you start knitting and knit?

First you need two knitting needles, preferably of the same size and length, then you need some yarn or wool. To start knitting you need to cast on. Try this answer on how to cast on . . .How_do_you_cast_on_in_KnittingTo begin knitting after you have cast on the number of stitches you are happy with, insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle, from bottom to top, right to left, making sure the right needle goes behind the left needle. You should now be holding the needles in an X shape with the working yarn beside them both. Wrap the yarn around the back needle and then in between the needles. You then bring the right (back) needle to the front, keep in on the left needle to you don't lose the stitch. Then lift the right needle with the new loop stitch on it over and off the left needle. You should now have a new stitch on your right needle. Repeat this until you have finished the row. Then you do it on all the other rows until you are done.

How do you stop the edges of your knitting from rolling in?

You can either add a few rows of garter stitch (which is knit every row) or you can do a few rows of ribbing (which is knit 1, purl 1). One of my favorite boarders to put on sweaters or scarves is the seed stitch (knit 1, purl 1 to the end of the row and turn your work, then you purl the knit stitches and knit the purls and you just keep repeating that every time you turn your work)

What equipment do you need when knitting?

Knitting is done with NEEDLES. They are smooth pointy sticks with a cap on the end to keep the stitches from falling off the back side. Needles also come in double pointed kinds with a point on either end. These are for knitting in the round when you want to make a tube with no seams (like a sock or a turtleneck) You hold the needles one in each hand move them in a specific way that threads a continuous piece of yarn into little interlocking loops. This is how you knit yarn into a usable, wearable fabric. In addition to Needles, you need basic needlework supplies like scissors, tape measure, ruler, instructions for your pattern, and an iron and ironing board to finish your work neatly. You might want some specific convenience tools that are sold for knitters to make their work faster or easier. Lots of people buy stitch counters, which basically help you keep track of stitches in a pattern so it's easier for you to follow along and keep your place. If you get distracted easily or you have a difficult time following patterns, you might want one. Point protectors are little rubber caps that look like tiny gnome hats. People buy them to put on the end of their needles when they stop knitting. The point protectors keep the stitches from slipping off when you have tired of knitting for the day but your have not finished the project. There are tons of other little gadgets that I don't have and don't use but that lots of people seem to like. Before you rush out and buy a bunch of knitting related stuff, ask yourself what areas you have trouble with. Once you know where you need help, you'll know what extra tools might be useful to you. Otherwise you'll have a drawer full of unused knitting gadgets that you find you didn't need to buy. Best of luck--Jo
