Are you knitting? If by basic stitch, you mean garter stitch, it is because you are knitting on both sides of the work. It may also mean your working yarn is in the wrong place when you attempt to pearl a stitch.

A stockinette stitch is achieved by knitting on one side of the work and pearling on the other. When knitting, the working yarn should be at the back of the work, away from you.

When pearling, the working yarn should be pulled between the needle and the work,( closest to you) and then work the stitch the same as a knit stitch. This should fix your problem, but if not, please ask more questions.

What is a knitting stitch called?

There are 2 basic knitting stitches: stockinette stitch and garter stitch. The stockinette stitch is where you knit one side and purl the other which gives you a smooth side and a bumpy side. Garter stitch is where you knit every row which gives you a bumpy look on both sides.

You are knitting a scarf using knit one row purl a row it keeps rolling up at the ends is there a way you can fix it without changing the pattern?

When you alternate between knit and purl rows (knit one row, purl one row, knit one row, purl one row, etc.) it is called the Stockinette stitch.Unfortunately, the stockinette stitch always curls at the edges, and worse, there is no easy or perfect way to fix this problem. If you have a knowledge of crochet stitches, you could crochet an edging around the scarf, but this would change the whole look of the scarf, and there is no guarantee that it would work. The best way to avoid this problem with future scarves is to knit it in garter stitch (knit every row), or another stitch that will not curl. Also, if you like the look of the stockinette stitch and would still like to use it, then work in stockinette, but at the beginning of each purl row, knit the first three stitches and the last three stitches. If you do this, remember to change the yarn to the back or front of the work depending on whether you are changing to the knit or purl stitch.

If you knit one row then pearl the next row using that pattern will your final outcome look the same on both sides?

If you alternate rows (one row knit, one row purl, and repeat), this is stockinette stitch (or stocking stitch). It does NOT look the same on both sides. One side with be smooth (all the stitches look like little V's) and the other side is all small horizontal bumps. If you want it to look the same on both sides, you should probably knit every row (garter stitch) or look up a pattern that is designed to look the same on both sides (like ribbing). http://handmadebyjody.blogspot.com http://handmadebyjody.etsy.com

What is the meaning of reverse stitch?

Stocking stitch is a basic knitting pattern where the first row in knit and the second row is purled. These two rows are repeated to make the pattern. The "front" side of the fabric will look like a series of Vs, while the "back" looks like a bunch of bumpy ridges.

Are cross stitch and knitting different in a brief?

Cross stitch is a form of embroidery. (Cross stitch designs are done on grids, so they look like they might be for knitting. You could probably use some cross stitch designs for intarsia or fair isle color knitting.)

When using garter stitch what does ending with a wrong side row mean?

The "wrong side" in knitting is the side that doesn't show the pattern. The wrong side is the one that goes inside toward your skin in the making of a garment. So if you are making a garment, look to the side that has the pattern clearly, this will be the "right side".

Can I whip-stitch my sweater that I am crocheting instead of sewing it?

Yes, with crocheting that should look fine. I wouldn't advise using a whip stitch with knitting as it will show and not look very good. But with crochet, because of the way the yarn loops around in the stitches, a whip stitch will not be particularly noticeable.
