A quilt feels warm because the air trapped in the cotton or woolen batting acts as an insulator and does not allow the heat of the body to escape. However, when the quilt gets old - the cotton/wool gets compressed and the airspace are done away with. It does not remain as good an insulator to heat as it was earlier. Hence it feels less warm.

Why is a new quilt warmer than an old one?

This will all depend upon what the quilt is made of. When making a quilt, you can add more padding to it if you wish.

Why is a newly made quilt warmer than an old one?

Some older quilts were made of cotton or fillings that washed away over the years, so a newer quilt will be warmer. Older quilts could also have been made of fabrics that were made of fewer threads, and therefore become what we call "threadbare" over time. To re-work older quilts, you can carefully separate the layers, and add new batting, or add a new layer to the old quilt, as new backing.

How do people recycle American quilts ones they have finished using them?

Quilts can be reused, re-purposed or recycled in any number of ways. Often an old but still beautiful quilt will be kept as an art piece, to be hung on a wall or draped gently over a piece of furniture where it can be enjoyed without further wear on the textiles. Other quilts that have bad damage along the edges or in certain areas might be cut down and re-bound as a smaller quilt to be used on a crib or as a lap quilt. Some crafters will cut up old quilts and use them to make dolls or paper-machet type objects; that practice is generally condemned by the quilting community. Yet another old method of recycling worn-out quilts was to use them as filler for an entirely new bed cover, enclosing the old worn quilt in a new back and top. This thicker "comforter" was generally tied rather than quilted and used as an everyday blanket.
