Cotton is grown in areas that have hot weather and a cotton field has no shade. To be able to pick the cotton from the plant the plant is killed first. The plant is a low growing shrub like plant and when dead the cotton bolls open. Until cotton picking machines were invented people would hand pick the cotton off the plant. It doesn't come off easy and raw cotton is itchy and rather prickly, and it takes some effort to get it off. There are several bolls per plant. The picked cotton was put in bags that the person wore so as they moved through the field the bag would get heavier and drag. The base of the plant may also hide snakes and other living things.
