The problem is often that the handle is sticking and has not returned to the fully "down" position, i.e. it is already halfway "up" and therefore won't pull "up" on the locking mechanism.
The solution on my Outback is to push the handle down, and I can usually feel it engage. Then just pull up and the door opens.
Many Outback (and Legacy and Forester) owners lube the handle occasionally. So far I have always had success just pushing it down so I haven't bothered to lube it. If it gets so stuck that it won't push back down, then I'll lube it with wd-40 or something else.
You can open the driver's door and press the "unlock" switch on the armrest. This should unlock all the doors, including the rear hatch. If it doesn't, your solenoid that operates the lock needs to be replaced. For that, see your Subaru dealer.

In the 2002 Subaru Outback, the hatch release lever is located on the driver's side door panel. It is typically a small, rectangular button or lever that can be pressed to unlock the rear hatch. Additionally, there may also be a release button on the key fob, allowing you to open the hatch remotely. Make sure the vehicle is in park for the hatch to open properly.
The open-close sensor for the rear hatch on a 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon is typically located within the latch assembly of the rear hatch itself. This sensor detects whether the hatch is closed or open and is integrated into the mechanism that secures the hatch when it's closed. If you're troubleshooting, it's often accessible by removing the interior trim panel on the rear hatch.
If the fuel door lever on your Subaru Outback isn't working, you can manually open the fuel door by accessing the release mechanism from inside the trunk. Look for a small access panel or a cable that you can pull to release the door. If you're unsure where to find this, consult the owner's manual for your specific model year for detailed instructions. If the issue persists, consider taking your vehicle to a mechanic for repairs.
Solved the problem myself. Have to disassemble rear panels inside rear hatch until you find cable leading to gas tank door. About a hour or two. Replug plastic unit that opens gas door. Later glued it in place so this may not happen again.
Lift straight up while pulling on the door open handle. Once it click, pull towards you "feeding" the door handle out of its socket.
To use a slim Jim to open the door of a 2000 Subaru Outback, first, carefully slide the slim Jim between the window and the weather stripping on the driver's side. You need to locate the locking mechanism inside the door; gently maneuver the slim Jim until you feel resistance, then try to hook or push the mechanism. Be cautious not to damage any internal components or wiring. If you're unable to unlock the door, it's advisable to seek professional help.
Use the spare key or call a locksmith.

To replace the rear brake light bulb in a Subaru Outback, first, open the rear hatch and locate the taillight assembly. Remove the screws or clips securing the assembly and gently pull it away from the vehicle. Twist the bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it, then replace the old bulb with a new one, ensuring it's securely in place. Reassemble the taillight by reversing the steps and test the brake light to ensure it works properly.
