You need to look under your glove box at the hinge for two small pins that you need to release which holds the glove box hinge together.

  • Remove the hinge pins
  • Open your glove box & let it hang by the string that is attached to it
  • If you look directly behind where the box was, you should see a small, rectangular door.
  • Remove the door & pull out your air filter.
  • Slide the new filter in & place the small door back in place.
  • Close your glove box.
  • Put the 2 hinge pins back in place and you are done

Edit:

The two hinges may be loosened but the glove box is still suspended by two wires on either side so be careful.

Also, the 2 latches on the hatch opening are very tight and awkward and it must be opened from the bottom upward. It's a very tight fit so you may scrape your hands and/or fingers while prying it open!

You can also check the in-cabin air filter every few months and knock out any small leaves or debris that's collected in the filter to help the circulation.

Too bad Nissan built the in-cabin filter in such a terrible place. The position is changed in the newer Altima model in which you literally have to unscrew the glove compartment and part of the passenger side middle column to access the in-cabin filter which is behind the middle storage column below the glove compartment!
