Several variables here. Automatic or manual. Linkage on transmission or at shifter in cabin. Automatic shifter uses a cable, and can be accessed in cabin by removing the screws around the shifter, no need to take the console out. Once the plate is off you will see a single bolt through an 'eye'. At Transmission another single bolt holds a lever on. Manual uses a combination of a cable and steel rods. In cabin, remove boot, again no need to remove entire console..IF you small fingers--it's tight. At transmission there are several small (10mm) bolts attaching linkage. When you dissemble that, take a picture or make a drawing, several pieces will fall apart.
