How do to replace an ignition switch on a 1988 Toyota Camry?

Since you will be working with the door open, the chime will drive you nuts so disconnect the battery.

Next remove the screws holding the 2 halves of the steering column cover so that you have room to slide a coat hanger wire along side of ignition switch.

Next insert the ignition key and turn it to ACC.

Next locate the word LOCK on the ignition switch and look approximately 1 & 3/4 inches along side of it. There you will barely see a slight depression in the housing. The genius to placed it there should be shot!

Next cut a piece of a wire coat hanger and make the tool described below.

Cut the hanger so that you have about a 6 inch long piece of wire.

On one end, bend it so it is a 1/4 inch length at a 90 degree angle.

Slide the wire along side the switch barrel and insert the 1/4 part into the depression.

At the same time pull on the key.

The whole lock assembly will slide out when you have correctly pushed in the pin that is hidden in the depression.

Note, you cannot see the pin due to its location. You have to feel for it using the wire tool you made.
