R-12 and R-134A are not interchangable, so you need to first make sure your system is retrofitted with new parts, often a Compressor, Dryer and expansion valve, and has been fully flushed as the oil used with R-12 is not compatible with R-134A. It really should be done by a qualified professional, as you need to recover any R-12 left in the system, as it is very damaging to the ozone.
