The best winter settings are defrost, external air flow and hot temp. In warmer, rainy weather, the best settings are is defrost, external air, comfortable temp, and A/C on. The A/C is necessary to dry the external air but is not needed in wintry conditions, becase the air already has very low moisture content (even when snowing). The biggest mistake that folks make is having internal air circulation turned on. In this setting, humidity from your breath builds up. Even heating this air will eventually become ineffective.
