I assume that your question is prompted by the existence of a plastic guard under the engine that looks like a skid pan. You can lower the pan enough to get the filter off by removing the two 12 mm head capscrews just behind the bumper.
Be warned that you should probably remove the whole pan, requiring removal of two more screws at the back of the pan and a push-in plug on each side, because oil from the removal of the filter will get into the insulation on the pan.
Once you get the pan down, the filter is one of the easiest you'll ever change. Plenty of room around it and it is completely inverted so that when you fill the new filter with oil, you don't have to tilt it when you install. --Ken
You don't actually have to remove the whole pan. There's an access panel held in by 6 plastic clips designed to swing away to access the sump drain and filter. It's well positioned and adequately sized so that the insulation on the pan isn't affected. (That is if it isn't already affected by the oil leaking from the Suby's notoriously fragile head cylinder gaskets) - Phlanger.
Remove the plastic shield marked: "oil filter and oil drain" on the splash guard under the motor.Easy to reach easy to change.

2011 Subaru Forester
Engine oil capacity for the 2.5 liter is around 5 quarts. A little more when you change the filter, but 5 quarts will do. But then you'll find that out the first time that you change the oil.

Your local auto parts store will recommend the correct filter based on the brands that they carry. --Ken
That depends on the brand of filters that your auto parts store carries. While you are there checking out the brands they also have filter cross references that will tell you which filters that they carry will fit your Subaru.
Just like changing engine oil only in a different location and with different oil.
Changing the oil in every vehicle is a little different but essentially the same. Drain plug and filter are similar across all modern vehicles. Subaru puts a dust shield under the front of the engine and it must be removed to gain easy access to the filter. Because you ask here, I would suggest that you have your first oil change done by a professional who will allow you to watch. --Ken
Change it every 5,000 miles and you will be fine.
The oil in your subaru forester should normally be changed every 10000 miles or if diffrent will state it in your user manual. On most occassions the car will tell you when it is due for a service or oil change by displaying a symbol like a spanner that flashes or by some other form which will easily be recognized as a service.
