Have not had the opportunity to do so on a 2004, but I have changed plugs on a '96, '00, and '07. They are essentially the same. You will need to remove part of the air intake system and possibly battery and windshield washer reservoir. Plugs are in a deep well and having an assortment of socket extensions and accessories is essential. A long-tipped angled needle-nose pliers always comes in handy to fetch the socket and plug from the well. If you have a well equipped tool box and you have changed spark plugs on other vehicles you should be set. Good luck!
To change the freeze plugs on a 2000 Subaru Outback, first drain the coolant and remove any components obstructing access to the freeze plugs. Use a punch or a screwdriver to carefully tap out the old freeze plugs. Clean the surfaces where the new plugs will be installed, then apply a sealant if desired, and press the new freeze plugs into place, ensuring they are seated properly. Finally, reassemble any removed components and refill the cooling system with coolant.

To change the spark plugs on a 1997 Subaru Outback, first, ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Remove the engine cover if necessary, then carefully disconnect the ignition wires or coils from the spark plugs. Use a spark plug socket and ratchet to unscrew the old plugs and replace them with new ones, ensuring they are properly gapped. Finally, reconnect the ignition wires or coils and the battery terminal.

For a 1997 Subaru Outback, spark plugs should typically be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on the type of spark plugs used. If using standard copper spark plugs, more frequent changes closer to 30,000 miles are advised, while platinum or iridium plugs can last longer. It's also a good idea to check the owner's manual for specific recommendations and to monitor engine performance for any signs of wear. Regular maintenance can help ensure optimal engine performance.
