In order to get the "check engine light" to shut off, a diagnostic must first be performed. The diagnostic involves having a computer scanner connected to the vehicles computer. A code is then extracted. The code is a reference point for the mechanic/technician to find the faulty part, the code does not specifically say what part is affected. The mechanic/technician then has to check each part of that system in order to find the affected part for the repair. When the affected part is repaired or replaced, the check engine light will shut off or require the mechanic/technician to manually reset the computer. Now, after a vehicles computer is reset, the vehicle may have to go through a minimum 50 mile test drive in order to ensure that the repair went well, the computer is reading the newly installed part and working to specification, and to ensure no other problems exist on the vehicle that were not picked up on the initial scan of the computer.
