With the ignition off, ground terminal 8 on the data link connector. Turn on the ignition and the ABS warning light light will then begin to flash any codes stored.
See the Chilton or Hayes manual for the Xterra to confirm which terminal is number 8. There are pictures and the related procedure in both these books.
Take it to advanced auto parts and have them clear the codes ... its free.

On my 2002 Nissan Xterra I had to remove 4 screws from the front bumper and wheel well and then I was able to get to the back side of the side marker light and remove the nut in order to get to the light bulb.
