I had the same problem. Here's how I fixed it; you take off the cup holder assembly directly in front of the console lid by wedging a screwdriver on both sides and squeezing it with your other hand. This should unsnap it. Then the console lid and the cup holder should lift up together. Underneath you can see the latch where the console lid attaches to the cup holder assembly. I sprayed some WD-40 on the latch spring assembly and it pop free. Then you just snap back the cup holder which is now unlatched from the console lid. Thoroughly lubricate the latch spring assembly and it should work better.

To remove the lid of the center console in a 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS, start by locating and removing any screws or fasteners that secure the lid. Often, these can be found under the lid itself or at the back of the console. Once the screws are removed, gently lift the lid upwards to detach it from the hinges. If it feels stuck, check for any additional clips or tabs that might be holding it in place.

Just bought a 2004 Sienna (toyota Certified) and have had it back 2 x now (in 2 weeks) for this same problem. Service Dept tells me this is not uncommon and it will jam if you "Pull it wrong"!!! If I have to go back a 3rd time...they better come up with a permanent solution as this is VERY dangerous.
