To read the transmission dipstick on a 2000 Kia Sportage 4x4, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is running at normal operating temperature. With the engine running, pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsert it fully. Then remove it again to check the fluid level; it should be within the designated marks on the dipstick. Additionally, check the fluid's color and smell; it should be a clear red and not burnt.
With the engine running and warmed up all the way you should see the dipstick located on the right hand side of the engine in the back ( same side as the oil dipstick). It should have a black rubber top on it. Just pull it all the way out wipe it off put it back in then pull it back out to read what the level is.
Remove the dipstick from the automatic transmission dipstick tube and read it. It will tell you what type of ATF to use.

If it is an automatic, read the dipstick. It is written on the dipstick. If it is a standard tranmission, mercon works.
Start the engine and let it idle in park. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, reinsert, pull out and read the level.
