To remove the transmission from a 1997 Suzuki Sidekick 1.8, first ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported. Disconnect the battery, then remove the drive shafts, exhaust system, and any associated wiring and linkages. Next, unbolt the transmission from the engine and carefully slide it out, ensuring to support it properly to avoid damage. Finally, consider using a transmission jack for easier handling during the removal process.

You must remove the transmission pan and fluid. There are 18 hex bolts holding the valve body on. Remove them. Next remove air cleaner assembly on top of the motor and remove linkage to top of tranny. After valve body is removed you will see the sensor.

http://www.kick-fix.com/ see timing belt section. for both motors , 8v and 16v. It is a pretty big job and if you want to tackle it I suggest you get a manual from a parts store for about $18 and it will have pictures and everything. You also will have it for the next repair. Good luck.
