To remove the water pump from a 1985 MR2, start by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and draining the coolant. Then, remove the serpentine belt and any associated components obstructing access to the water pump, such as the timing cover and the alternator. Unbolt the water pump from the engine block, carefully prying it loose if necessary. Finally, clean the mating surfaces and install the new pump with a fresh gasket before reassembling everything in reverse order.
