Just changed mine. Repair guides say to remove RH lower splash shield, the battery and coolant overfow tank (you need to do this get access to the top bold of the starter with a long extension on your wrench. What the guides do not tell you is how to get the starter out once it is disconnected! I considered removing the oil filter, but wasn't sure the housing the filter screws on to might not still be in way. So what I did was remove the cooling fans, this gives lots of room to get it out and reach the 2 bolts. Removing the fan is a bit tricky. I drained justa little coolant out so I could disconnect the top radiator hose. In order tyo make a little wiggle room to get it out, I removed the 2 top brackets for the radiator, did not lift the radiator out or anything, it just alloeed it to be pushed forward a bit to get the fan out. You will have to wiggle it up and to the driver side to remove it.
Also make sure you find out from your VIN number by calling a dealer, to find out if your starter is 1.2KW or 1.4KW output. the 1.4 is for cold climates, but it is not marked on the starter which KW it is. Some Parts store know which KW they have and some don't. So buy a starter that can tell you if it is Cold weather or 1.4KW. Buying from a Toyota dealer would get you thr right one, but is costly.
