the water pump on that motor is ran by the timing chain it is in the front of the motor under a black cover that is held on by 4 bolts and you have to remove a cover like that on the back side of the motor on the front and remove t chain tensionor and turn the motor backwards alittle and then remove the 3 bolts that hold water pump in and the you need to install 2 bolts that screw into the water pump and pulls it out.this is not a real easy job to do for a do it your selfer if you mess it up you could have to remove the whole font cover of the motor to retime it.
You do not have to but it is recommended to do so.

The water pump is driven off the timing chain. I would recommend purchasing a repair manual for that vehicle if you are going to DIY.
YOU DON'T!!! I have a 2003 avalanche and I had to replace the water pump you can't replace the seals!!! It's a defect in the 2001 to 2003 avalanche the seals fail.
The 2002 Nissan Maxima water pump is located on the front of the engine. You can follow the top radiator hose directly to the water pump.

I am trying to change the Belt that goes around the power steering pump on my 2003 maxima and don't know how to release the tention from the belt. This is the inner belt I'm speaking of..Thanks for any assistance/direction

The water pump is in behind your timing cover.
Take your old water pump out. Take it down to your local parts store Get a new water pump and then put it in.
To replace the water pump on your vehicle if you do it yourself would be about $65. To have a shop do it, it would cost $250 to $300.
