Ignition timing should be set to 6 deg BTDC, this is done with a timing light. Connect the power leads of you're timing light to the battery and put the pickup clamp over #1 plug wire. Disconnect the vacuum line on the vacuum advance and plug the line so it does not create a vacuum leak. Start the engine and shine the light on the crank pulley to see the timing mark. It should be pointed at 6 deg BTDC.
See the attached links on how to install and check you're timing belt.

All mazda b series with a b2000 or b2200 are a NON interference engine. So in short if your timing belt broke it will not damage the engine.
Stock ignition timing at idle is 6 deg BTDC +/- 1 deg. I like to set mine for about 7 or 8 deg BTDC. Kyrasis6 Mazdatruckin.com

To set the timing marks on your 1989 Mazda B2200, first ensure the engine is at operating temperature and then turn off the engine. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing cover; align the crankshaft pulley mark with the "0" degree mark on the timing cover. Use a timing light connected to the number one cylinder's spark plug wire, and adjust the distributor until the timing light shows the correct timing specification according to your service manual. Finally, tighten the distributor bolts and recheck the timing to ensure it remains in alignment.
