How many MPG any car gets depends solely on how the car is driven. If one does constant jack rabbit starts the MPG will drop to about 15 ... if one drives very conservatively, the MPG could rise to over 30.
Don't know about 97 but my 95 Tercel with 5EFE gets between 42 to 44 mpg

It gets about 31 miles per gallon with regular unleaded and about 36 mpg with super unleaded. The 1997 Toyota Avalon that is. I own one and that is what i get.
