The 1997 Tercel's alternator is located (if your looking from the front of the car) on the lower left side of the engine. It can be accessed from the underside of the car after removing the shield under the car.
the voltage regulator is built into the alternator
disconnect negative battery tml.,remove the plug from the alternator, remove the main battery wire from the stud on the alternator, remove the lock bolt, swing alternator down to remove belt, remove pivot bolt, swing alt. until its out. replacement is reverse of remova; To take out the alternator on a 88' tercel, you have to do it from under the car

Bad battery and/or alternator.
The placement of the voltage regulator depends on the year of the Tercel. Some are mounted on the fender or firewall, most are an integral part of the alternator and cannot be replaced separately.
It sounds like your alternator is no longer recharging your battery. You probably need a new alternator.
Pull the motor out of the car and change it.
