block heaters are kinda hard to install. you would have to drain your coolant and take out one of the freeze plugs. that's were the block heater gets put in to warm the coolant in the block.

How do you put in a block heater?

There are different types of block heaters... Most common one is a freeze plug style heater. you have to remove a freeze plug and install the heater in its location. unfortunatly some engine blocks, such as Saturn engines, do not have freeze plugs. some vehicles have to use an external heater, where it mounts to the outside of the engine block, these heat from the outside of the engine to the inside, and are less effective. Another common one is installed in your radiator hose, simple to install and effective. other options are dipstick heaters, or magnetic oil pan heaters.

Do block heaters and coolant heaters work the same?

yes in a way. block heaters heat the coolant in the block there for warming the block up. coolant heaters heat the coolant out side the engine like in the hoses and radiater. and when the coolant gets hot enough it opens the thermosate and starts flowing through the engine..The coolant heater should be hooked into the engine so that it heats only the engine and the heater core. If the coolant heater is trying to heat the radiator then it will not work very well to heat the engine, you would need a lot of BTUs to heat the radiator as it will shed all that heat to the air that is surrounding it.

Where is the block heater on 2008 Subaru Outback?

No mention of a block heater in the service manual. It appears that they install heaters on the left side rear of the engine. Of course this type of heater plugs in to household power so if you have one it should be fairly easy to find the cord/plug and trace it back to the heater.
