Walter Guinan who created the Karastan brand would love your question. He created the name Karastan on a bar napkin because he wanted to create a line of carpet & rugs to sell through department stores that people would believe were something hand made and exotic. There is not nor was there ever a land or tribe called Karatsan. Pakistan, Tajikistan or Afghanistan, yes; but no Karastan. Today Karastan carpet & rugs are all mass produced, made on machines in a plant in exotic North Georgia, by the second largest carpet mill in the world, Mohawk Industries. They are neither exotic nor unique, just sold that way. A true oriental rug will be hand made & will have some intrinsic value. Sadly the world is so awash in fine Orientals that even genuine Orientals don't hold their value and seldom increase as antique rugs did.. Many a Karastan rug has been sold by a great salesman that told the buyer that it was an investment,, they were just selling the dream, Karastan rugs hold no such value.
Karastan rugs are sold at many places, including Macy's. You can buy them online at rugstudio and at Karastan's own website as well as Macy's online..
