First have you noticed any coolant in your oil when you did a oil change?Or you have to add coolant to the radiator or overflow container? If yes to either the oil would be milky colored and your antifreeze level would be low in the radiator or overflow all the time. This would point to the headgasket being the issue. Now if neither of these apply I would suggest doing a coolant flush, replace the upper and lower radiator hoses, new thermostat and new coolant. And next a expensive tune up which would be new plugs,wires,cap/rotor button, air filter, pcv valve, clean the egr valve and if carburated clean it with the entire air cleaner assembly off or at least propped up.Now I would change the oil and filter and new fuel filter and new oxygen sensor. Now if after the tune up I would turn to the exhuast side of the problem.I would remove the exhaust manifold replace the gasket and remove the exhuast collector which bolts to the exhaust manifold.I would clean this by soaking it in a brand new clean paint can with muractic acid(USE GLOVES) and let soak overnite to remove the carbon build up.Forgot use baking soda to neutralize the acid with water and let air dry or blow out with air.The only way to remove the collector is from under the truck once you remove the three nuts and two small nuts holding the piping in place.Do the exhaust manifold gasket because it makes it easier to remove the collector. Now is the catalyltic convertor have over 60,000 miles it may be clogged up with carbon and needs to be replaced and may suggest your muffler in conjunction with this.I know this is a list from all get out. However if the exhaust is clogged it can cause NO power, choking and overheating because of the blockage. If you want to short cut the issue clean the exhaust collector, have the cat and muffler replaced assuming the tune stuff is in order and the head gasket or no coolant loss is the problem. If you have any further?s just reply back under the DISCUSSION tab on this post!Ok I know this engine I have owned my 87 b2200 for 23 years I know this truck!!!!!!

Why would a car overheat going up hill?

The engine works hard and produces a lot more heat than when the car is driven on a leveled road. The car is usually driven slower on the uphill and there isn't as much air cooling the radiator. But the main reason it overheats is that the cooling system is malfunctioning.
