I just replaced mine. It is a black box, about 1" x 1" x 2". It is located just behind and below the radio. You can access it from the driver side. It is somewhat hard to get to, but I'm no expert and it took me less than 5 minutes. You have to slide it off the bracket and then unplug it. Just plug in the new one and slide it back on the bracket. It was $83.00 from the Nissan dealer. Good luck!
Feb 20, 2009:
Hello, last night I replaced the flasher on my 2001 Nissan frontier crew cab.
Finally located the flasher above right ankle near but not attached to steering column. It hangs fitted onto a metal tongue by slides built into the flasher unit housing. Just lift the flasher and it slides easily off the tongue shaped metal support. Flasher housing labeled as NISSAN 25731 1M200; 12.8V 85 c/m T/S 27W X 2 + 3.4W.
Lay down on the driver side floor with a flashlight looking toward the passenger side of the steering column . Very easy to spot if it works well enough to click while you are looking. The flasher is plugged into a white base that has the three female receptacles into which wires are fixed.
Slide the unit up and off the metal support. Once free and dangling by the wires, find, on one side or the other, the pressure point to disengage the hook that holds the unit into the white housing. It easily comes out of the housing; no forcing needed.
50 to 65$ for the OEM part on the web. Found a $13 generic replacement at Pep Boys labeled as:
Tridon Stant EP34 "12V 3 Terminal Electronic turn signal or hazard warning with lamp outage indicator FLASHER" written on the package. The new unit lacks the slide supports that the original one has so let it dangle, stick it on with tape or sticky Velcro or use cable ties strings etc to secure it.
I bought the Tridon EP34 at Advance Auto and swapped it into the original Nissan plastic snap together housing. Its a perfect fit and really easy to do. This way the original slide track mount and cable latch work like original.
