Basically, the greater the compression ratio, the bigger the bang when a spark (from your spark plug) is introduced to the compressed fuel. If the bang and the strength of the piston, cylinder wall, tie rods etc. are well calibrated, your car will go fast. If they're not your engine will go bang and your car won't go anywhere.
