map sensors on every vehicle stand for Manifold Absolute Pressure. meaning the further your foot is on the accelerator the less vacuum the engine has so the sensor senses this and adjusts fuel quantity accordingly. Usually, when the map sensor goes out black smoke is present at the tailpipe because the diaphragm of the sensor has failed causing no difference between idle and wide-open throttle. The sensor sees no vacuum and thinks you are accelerating when in actuality you are idling. master technician 26 years
