Weak valve springs can also cause chatter, so the best diagnosis is to remove the head and check the "valve to guide" clearance which should be very small. Clearances of .002" are common. This value equates to an almost "snug" fit in the valve guide. With the head off and the valve stem off of its seat a half inch or so, there should be little to no play. This quick check can be performed easily by the home mechanic, but any excessive play in the "stem to guide" clearance should be entrusted to a reputable machine shop. A lot of posts try and relate worn valve guides to smoke on decelleration and fail to bring up the most obvious tell-tale sign,...the SOUND!
