check your fluid, metal shavings could indicate your torque converter is grinding and about to fail, or check that your fluid level is even topped up! (look for leaks) anything else would require removal of the transmission to inspect and diagnose
best of luck

5.7 quarts for automatic transmission
not likely. the 1997 Mazda protege is a different chassis than the 1999 protege (BHA to BJ, respectively). the two transmissions between the two generations are also different, the BHA utilizing the FB4A-EL automatic transmission and the BJ utilizing the FN4A-EL automatic transmission. they also have different engines. you're better off going to a junkyard and pulling a auto trans from a third generation protege (1999-2003)...that would work. if you have any further questions, you can follow this link: www.protegefaq.net hope this helps!
in most cars, when your car dont go over about 30mph, its a trans problem.
where is the transmission shift solenoid located on a 2001 Mazda protege
Can it be done? Sure. Should it be done? Absolutely not - you'll destroy your transmission, and flat towing a front-wheel drive vehicle is never a recommended practice, even with a manual transmission.
A 1992 Mazda Protege typically requires about 2.6 to 2.7 quarts of automatic transmission fluid when performing a transmission fluid change. It's important to check the owner's manual for the specific model and transmission type, as requirements can vary slightly. For manual transmissions, the capacity is generally around 1.9 quarts. Always ensure to use the recommended type of transmission fluid.
I am a car salesperson. It cannot be done. Besides, the car is 20 years old. Why would you want to?
you must unbolt the frame from the body to be able to access 2 bolts
I have a 1993 Protege. The hold button keeps the transmission from up shifting. I use it when I am coming down the hill in my neighborhood. Rather than braking the hold button keeps the trans in a lower gear and I remain at a safe neighborhood speed.
The HOLD light means you have an electrical problem with your transmission. See your mechanic ASAP.
hey i have one for sale its a 98 auto w/ac im in new york, where are you? my Email is lferrara80@yahoo.com
There can be many causes for a whining noise in automatic transmissions. The least expensive thing you can try to eliminate the noise is to have the transmission fluid and filter changed. Some shops will only replace the fluid unless you ask for the filter to be changed, so ask.
