One or all of these not working properly; bad radiator cap, low coolant, bad thermostat, clog radiator, clog heater core, fan not coming on due to bad relay.
If it's just occasionally, it may be a sticky thermostat.
A bad water pump or thermostat can cause an engine to overheat. A plugged (clogged) radiator or heater core may also cause an engine to overheat.
i asked this question the tempture gage shows it is over heating but the engine is cold to touch
It's the current flowing in a wire that causes it to overheat.
Your coolant level is low.
your cooling fans are not kicking in. They make have clutches that have gone bad. they need to be replaced. Also check the themostat
