I'm still trying to figure it out on my 97. Does at random for about 1 to 5 mins at a time.
Will update when I figure it out. The net so far is of no help!
Yes it should, since the are of the 3rd generation Legacy Outback. But don't quote me on this...

The fuel capacity of a 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon is approximately 15.9 gallons (60 liters). This capacity allows for a reasonable driving range, depending on fuel efficiency and driving conditions. It's important to note that actual usable capacity may vary slightly based on factors such as fuel system design and vehicle condition.

The Second Generation Legacy Outback hood will fit on a Second Generation Impreza Outback, but you have to cut or grind the sides down a little (less than a half inch on either side). You might have to reposition the hood hinges too. I know because I just test fitted a 99 Impreza Outback hood on a 98 Legacy Outback and it was too narrow by less than an inch.
