The 2014 Toyota Highlander-Hybrid has a continuously variable-speed automatic.

It varies the "drive ratio" by varying the speed of two electric motors (inside the transmission housing), in combination with the gas engine speed (if it's running) in a "dual planetary-gear set". Therefore no clutches are used, which is the primary "wear & tear" point in mechanical automatic transmissions.

The rear wheels are not driven by this transmission, but by their own (third) electric motor located inside the rear drive differential housing.
