I have owned two Isuzu trooper's.

and 88 and a 98.

Both having higher mileage I have always used 10W-30.

If your truck is burning oil it may help to get a higher viscosity of oil, but 10W-30 will get the job done.

Where do you put gear oil in a 1997 Isuzu trooper?

In a 1997 Isuzu Trooper, gear oil is typically added to the manual transmission through the fill plug located on the side of the transmission housing. For the rear differential, you can find the fill plug on the differential case. Make sure to use the recommended type and viscosity of gear oil specified in the owner’s manual. Always check the levels with the vehicle on a level surface for accuracy.

When I was looking at the recall and revision page in the chilton manual it had an entry of a revision for the oil type to help remove the ticking in the engine that is caused by a varnish build up of the oil and it suggest to use 0w30 to get rid of it. I don't know what the normal is though it is probably 5w30. Hope I was able to help.
