You need to have a special filter wrench to do it, which is a cup-type as opposed to a band-type. Filter is cartridge not spin-on.

No. 2008 highlander has a aluminum filter housing you need to remove with a special type of filter wrench. I was able to tap mine loose without a wrench but it could be at 24n-m tight which is difficult to loosen.
The oil filter wrench size for a 2008 Volvo C70 typically requires a 36mm socket or an adjustable oil filter wrench. It's important to ensure that the wrench fits securely around the filter to avoid damage during removal. Always double-check the specific filter type and size, as variations may exist depending on the engine configuration.
The filter is in a filter housing. Remove the plug in the bottom of the housing. The filter housing is then loosened using a specific wrench for that housing type.
Just unscrew the filter. If you cannot remove it with your hands, it was put on too tight, which is common, as most people tighten them too much. You will need to use a good filter wrench. The type wrench you will need depends on how much room you have. Oil the gasket & Put the new filter back on and only tighten it 3/4 turn after the filter makes contact with the mounting surface. By doing this you will not need a filter wrench when removing the filter next time. 3/4 turn is plenty tight and any more is too much.Just unscrew the filter. It uses a cartridge type filter. You can buy a wrench that will fit the cartridge, but a large channel lock wrench will accomplish the task, unless you over-tighten. Remember to remove the filter drain plug, before removing the filter. Be sure and replace the O ring on both the drain plug an the filter.

Flush engine. Allow car to idle. Remove sump plug and let it drain. Remove filter with jaw type oil filter wrench. Replace existing filter with a quality z9 filter, mostly used on ea falcon.
To change the oil filter first drain the old oil. Then use an oil filter wrench, preferably the cup type you put on a ratchet, and unscrew the filter. The filter is located right next to the oil pan, it's pretty obvious what it is. Then take the new filter, rub some oil on the gasket, and hand tighten it. DO NOT tighten with wrench, only hand tighten it! Then fill the car with new oil. All done.
As you face the front of the vehicle, the drain plug is on the left side of the engine. The oil filter is on the right side (driver's side). You will need to lift the driver's side of the vehicle slightly to access the oil filter. The engine cover must be partially removed to access the filter. You need remove only 4-5 screws (a 10mm socket wrench or box wrench is better than using a Phillips screwdriver to remove these). Once you remove these screws, you can pull down the cover and access the filter. An oil filter wrench (cup type that a 3/8ths socket wrench fits into) that fits over the end of the filter is the easiest way to remove the filter. When you put the new filter on, be sure to wipe some oil on the gasket. Hand tighten it, then turn it no more than a quarter of a turn with the wrench. You will need 14mm wrench to remove the drain plug. Be sure to recycle the used oil. Plan for 5+ quarts of oil.
It is in a recess on the right side of the oil pan. You will have to remove the under car engine cover to get to it. The oil filter is a canister type, there is a black plastic container that unscrews from the block, the filter is inside the container. It is not easy to remove. I don't have a tool to fit the end of the container, so I use a belt wrench instead. I don't remember where I got the wrench, but I found it by searching the net. You can buy the filter wrench from www.fcpgroton.com it's like $7.00
