I think that this is a GDI engine, and if it is, carbon build-up in the throttle body and inlet tract (which these engines are prone to) is a likely cause. There are products which you can squirt into the inlet tract while the engine is running which are supposed to help shift carbon. It would be a cheap thing to try and harmless if done properly, and besides being cheaper also far easier than a top-end engine strip-down which is the traditional way to clean carbon deposits from an engine.
Hope this helps.

Your thermostat is the likely culprit here it is probably stuck closed. Have it checked out.
Why does my 2001 kia sportage idle rough?
it does not run!!!!!
3 mm from the engine bay
NO, MOTOR MOUNTS ARE DIFFERENT, NO ROOM FOR THE INTERCOOLERS, NOT ENOUGH SPACE FOR THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, WOULD BE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE TO DO!
The 2001 Mitsubishi Gallant thermostat is located inside of the thermostat housing. You can follow the bottom radiator hose directly to the thermostat housing.

I have a 2001 I had the same problem when driven through rough roads and railroad tracks, I replaced the front struts and that solved the problem. I have a 2000 that rattles too. Looking for the answer.
