Sometimes it depends on the vehicle too. For instance, some GM trucks/Suburbans had problems with faulty ignition switches causing the dash guages/ speedo/Tach to go out, this also caused the transmissions to go into limp mode because the 12vdc power source is lost to the trans.

If your gauges are electrical, then you have an electrical short, and you should have the vehicle inspected by an automotive electrical technician to ensure that you are safe, as electrical fires can occur in a vehicle even if you aren't using it. If your gauges are not electrical then, the cable that connects to the back of the speedometer goes into the transmission, your cables need to be replaced.

Have the instrument panel checked for a defective voltage stabilizer, this is located on the back of the cluster, on the printed circuit panel.
