All modern fuel injected cars have fuel pump in the gas tank. Ain't no picnic changing any of them.
No. The Forester debuted in 1997, a time after Subaru went to AWD with all their vehicles.

Under the hood on the right (passenger) side on the firewall near the hood hinge. It is black with white lettering "FWD". Subaru does not recommend that you place the vehicle in FWD mode for every day driving. It is for use only as a test mode because it does change the handling characteristics of your Forester. --Ken
The Subaru Legacy is unique in its class because it does indeed have a standard all-wheel-drive system (AWD).
Simply put...you don't. They are always awd.
Foresters (especially 1st Gens, 98-02) are known for poor fuel economy. They are AWD, which means the engine is turning twice as many wheels as on most cars. This accounts for some higher fuel consumption.Another reason is the vehicle's poor aerodynamic coefficient. The Forester is basically identical to an Impreza, but the 98 Impreza is rated at 21 mpg, while the Forester is rated at only 20 mpg. That's 5% lower just due to the shape.
