your not giving year ,but should be OBD11 unless 1996 or earlier. There is offered software that plugs into laptop with special harness, but it is pricy, recommend you get OBD11 tester from say Autozone,on sale $ 59.00 to $329.00.
The 1991 Taurus has the old OB1 system. The data connector is at the firewall ( under hood )on the passenger side. It consists of a 6 pin connector and a single pin self test connector. This vehicle can be self tested through the check engine light. You will need a manual for the procedure.
On a 2007 Ford Ranger : The Data Link Connector is in the lower part of your dash , below the steering wheel and between the inside hood release and the parking / emergency brake release . It is behind a small plastic panel that removes ( or maybe flips up )
On cars from about 1980 to 1996 they have ON BOARD DIAGNOISTICS 1 which is not as effocoent as OBD11. I am not sure how you get the codes from the OBD1 on this perticular car other than a scanner which auto zone will read for free. On the American cars you ground the "A" and"B" terminals in the ALDL connector and count the flashes of the check engine light.
OBD11 DTC definitions PO-456 EVAP emmission control system leak (very small) possibly faulty purge valve
Because if the technician can't use the data link connector on the car to access the computer, then they have to assume the computer is defective in other ways or the system has been tampered with, wires cut, etc.

no
Try cleaning the MAF with a can of elecrical cleaner. then clear the code with a OBD11 tester.
OBD II was used in Fords starting in 1996 ( there should be an EEC TEST connection in your engine compartment somewhere near the battery )
On Board Diagnostic ( two ) I believe the first model year was ( 1996 )
With an OBD2 scan tool.
