The EGR valve is bolted to the rear cylinder head at the transaxle end
see the egr valve location on the 1999 Nissan Maxima-it should be very similar.
Code P1400 means EGR solenoid valve or circuit fault

The EGR valve on a 1996 Nissan Altima is on top of the engine. The air filter box has to be removed to access the valve.
There isn't one.
It all depends on the production date of your Maxima. Federal emission Maxima 06-2000- 06-2001 are EGR delete.

* Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body and air filter housing * Detach the vacuum line from the EGR valve.Disconnect the EGR pipe nut * Remove the EGR valve mounting fasteners * Remove the EGR valve and gasket from the manifold.Discard the gasket * With a wire wheel buff the exhaust deposits from the EGR valve mounting surface on the manifold
