This is a very open ended question due to the fact that you gave no year or engine size. As a general rule of thumb tho you can follow back the upper hose and where it enters the engine is where the thermostat is. Rules don't always follow this tho. In a 92 4 runner 3.0 engine the lower hose is where the thermostat is. Given this you can at least follow one or both of them back and you should locate the thermostat. It is usually under a half moon type of metal cap where the hose connects.
