The cabin air filter is changed for the same reason filters in your engine air, home heating/air conditioning and maybe even your refrigerator water filter need to be changed. Eventually they collect so much 'gunk' they clog and restrict the flow of whatever they're filtering. They can also begin to add an unpleasant odor as air (or water) passes through all the dirt, pollen, bugs etc that's been filtered.

The good news is changing cabin air filters is usually a very simple job that's detailed in the owner's manual and the filters aren't expensive.
