I don't agree they do.
I drove a 2003 Toyota Echo until the end of 2009 with about 175,000 miles on it.
It was still working very well when it got sold, over those six years no major problems, with regular maintenance was all it was serviced for except for a repair when the service engine light came on within the last year of having it.
